   We tried the steps outlined here (http://www.appnitro.com/forums/topic/send-email-via-external-email-server?replies=9) but when we add the code, the default page displays a blank white page. If we set it back, it works again.

   Any suggestions?

   that's odd. most likely you have some glitch with the code.
   try insert this line of code into your config.php file to see what's the error:

   ini_set("display_errors","1");
